HOUSING ADVOCACY

In courts, meetings with elected officials, corporate board rooms, and the media, FHOM is a tireless advocate for fair housing.

Having housing laws in place that protect our rights is a great start, but we'd like to see everyone have a strong appreciation of diversity and human rights in housing. As part of our ongoing work, FHOM is a tireless advocate for fair housing in courts, meetings with elected officials, corporate board rooms, and the media.

Ultimately, these goals include:

  • Eliminating discriminatory housing preferences,
  • Creating maximum accessibility in affordable housing for people with disabilities,
  • Assisting cities and developers to create inclusive affirmative marketing plans, (Model Affirmative Marketing Plan and Affirmative Marketing Policy Guide )
  • Adopting non-discriminatory housing preferences policies,
  • Building more than the required 5% accessible housing units,
  • Marketing new housing units aggressively to racial and ethnic minorities,
  • Increasing the number of reasonable accommodation agreements between landlords and persons with disabilities, and,
  • Assisting homeowners to rid their deeds of illegal restrictive covenants.
